Artist Statement

Sensuality, vitality and acts of nurture are recurrent themes in my work, reflecting my interest in searching for lushness and cherishing of the human body and experience. Through my paintings of personal experiences of lushness, I aim to evoke feelings of corporeality in a viewer.

I paint on silk, faux suede and cotton velvet to entice the mammal human in its desire for softness. Saturating the fabric with inks and dyes conveys the movement and fluidity of the internal body, and this surface becomes an integrated part of the work. Further layers of painting in inks and drawing in oil stick emphasise a sense of depth, with prismatic colours describing potential and energy.

I am often playful in my choice of subject matter and I use this, paired with the embrace of imperfection in my material method, to gently fray the critical judgement of our innately human flaws and foibles.
