Artist Statement
From the moment of birth, we can never fully merge ourselves with another. From the moment the child loses innocence, life is spent searching for the lost pieces to feel whole again. Inspired by Bracha Ettinger’s theories on the Matrixial Borderspace, I explore our yearnings and commonalities as a counterpoint to aspects of Western culture that encourage individualistic ways of being.
My work is driven by interest in the question of what we as humans have in common, how we yearn to connect deeply with others at the same time as imagining more space, time and freedom for ourselves. How do we amalgamate the elements that we gather through life to become ‘me’, and what do states of deconstruction of the self, like flow states, meditation and wonder expose about the human condition? My focus is on universal experiences: moments of wanting, of being aware and being watched, along with moments of wonder and awe, storytelling, and the social experiences of family.
