Tresco

Rose was invited to stay on Tresco for an artist residency. The resulting body of work speaks to that luxurious slow flow of time found in nature. Rose has chosen to focus on two opposing yet intricately connected parts of island life - the huge and spacious skies, and the intertidal zone.

Having worked with silk satin for many years in her luxury loungewear business, Rose has been drawn back to painting on the natural fabric, an entirely different process to working on canvas. She has developed her own method, inspired by traditional East Asian silk painting techniques observed during her time in Beijing, of preparing and stretching the silk to hold it fast during multiple applications of acrylic wash, which enables her to build up her paintings in the manner of a watercolorist. The resulting effect is a beguiling depth and an ever-shifting background with an appealing luminescence evocative of the light on Tresco island.
